THE HISTORY
Cortona farm holidays Antico Casale - History
The story of the Old Cottage dates back to 802, when Charlemagne donated the property and the Castle of Monte Gualandro to ARIBERTO, lord of Monte di Santa Maria. In the course of the centuries it was under the rule of several noble families and always had considerable strategic relevance due to its borderline position between Umbria and Tuscany, an obligatory point of passage on the shore of Lake Trasimeno. 18th century traces of the estate can be found in Abbot Bartolomeo Borghi’s reconstruction of the Battle of Trasimeno, which took place on this territory in 217 b.C. between Hannibal and the Romans (under consul Flaminius Nepos’ command). In the map of the Northern Valley of Lake Trasimeno, drawn by Abbot Borghi in 1794, one can see an "Osteria della Spelonga" on the border with the plain of Cortona.

Then the building became the Custom-house of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. Subsequently, the old cottage at the foot of Mt. Gualandro became the administrative center of the Monte Gualandro farm, owned by the Counts Ranieri of Sorbello as certified by some frescoes and coats-of arms of the family still present in the building (enlarged detail from "Administration of Monte Gualandro").

The estate borders on the "hunting road" that leads to the Castle of Monte Gualandro, sold by Pope Innocenct XI to Ruggero Ranieri in 1678: from this side of the park you can enjoy the view of the castle perched on the hill, as it was seen and sung by Giosuè Carducci in 1877 ("appollaiato sì come falco a meditar la caccia…").
