San Vivaldo
San Vivaldo (3 km from Borgoiano) is famous for the Sacred
Mount, or Jerusalem of Tuscany. It is situated in the middle of a
wide wood named Selva di Camporena , it is a group of chapels and
small temples decorated with terracotta statues and high relief from
the workshop of Della Robbia representing with skilful realism,
scenes from the Passion of Christ.
The complex is comprised of 18 chapels (originally there were 30,
before an earthquake and landslide destroyed some of them). The
chapels are the setting o f the largest complex of renaissance
terracotta sculptures in the world, which reproduce, in an “ancient”
version”, sites in Jerusalem and the life and Passion of Jesus
Christ. |
